Anand Mahindra Fulfils His Promise To Build A House For ‘Idli Amma’

| Published on April 8, 2021

M. Kamalathal, an 87-year-old lady from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu got famous for her act of kindness when the news of her feeding people in need a meal of idlis, sambhar, and chutney at Rs 1 per idli throughout the pandemic came to light.

It wasn’t just during the lockdown, ‘Idli Amma‘ has been selling idlis at Re 1 for over three decades now. It took a lot of time and the power of social media to make her a name known to all. Back in 2019, Anand Mahindra was so moved by her story that he promised to help her out. He was the one who highlighted her story to her many followers.

Mahindra tweeted her story saying that he would like to invest in her business by buying her an LPG stove.

One and a half years down the line and it seems Anand Mahindra is a man of his words. Not only he is going to fulfill his promise but offers Kamalathal so much more for her social service.

Mahindra has recently tweeted, “Only rarely does one get to play a small part in someone’s inspiring story, and I would like to thank Kamalathal, better known as Idli Amma, for letting us play a small part in hers. She will soon have her own house cum workspace from where she will cook & sell idlis.”

Kamalathal sells over 600 idlis each day and serves it with sambhar and chutney which she prepares in her small kitchen on a single wooden stove. She said that her idlis are priced to feed daily wagers so they can afford to eat while saving money for their families.

Mahindra Rise has already started the process of registering the land which will be her house/workplace as desired by Amma herself. The team is working closely with Kamalathal in order to ensure that the house is prepared as per her needs.

In his tweet, Mahindra thanks BharatGas Coimbatore for providing her a continued supply of LPG. Notably, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Coimbatore LPG Territory, had informed earlier in September 2019 that the LPG connection was issued to Kamalathal.
