From A Farmer’s Son To ISRO Chairman, All You Need To Know About Dr. K Sivan

Even after the last-minute snag in India’s mission Chandrayaan 2, there is no doubt that the whole country is feeling proud of ISRO and its scientists. The photo in which Dr. K Sivan, the present chairman of ISRO, is seen in tears sums up the mood of each and every person at ISRO but as PM Modi said, we are always proud of them.

Not many of you guys may have heard of Isro chief Kailasavadivoo Sivan before the Chandrayaan-2 moon mission. Below are some unknown facts about Sivan:

  • Sivan, a rocket scientist from Tamil Nadu, became the ninth chief of Isro in January 2018 after taking over from AS Kiran Kumar.
  • He was born to a farmer in Tarakkanvillai village in Kanyakumari district. Sivan studied in a local government school. He graduated from ST Hindu College in Nagercoil.

  • One of Sivan’s uncle says that Sivan was the first graduate in the family and is a self-made man. Sivan never took any tuition or coaching classes.
  • In the 1980s, Sivan finally completed his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and completed his masters in aerospace engineering from IISC, Bengaluru. Later, he completed his Ph.D. from IIT Bombay in 2006.
  • Sivan joined ISRO in 1982. He has been a part of many projects including GSLV, PSLV, GSLV MkIII apart from being a project director of GSLV rocket.

  • He has won Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in 1999, ISRO Merit Award in 2007, and Dr. Biren Roy Space Science Award in 2011.
