Online shopping has become very popularly and easy in the past few years. After the entry of players like Paytm and Phonepe among many more, online payment has become something that everyone is enjoying. As our technology comes with some cons, the internet has created some new type of scams using which thieves are targeting innocent customers.
Cashbacks and discounts are the major reasons why people prefer buying online. Some of them even waste hours looking for a coupon code to get discount at the things they are interested in buying. This is also the reason why E-commerce sales see a high revenue.
Fraud callers know this fact and they try to grab some easy money from online users as it happened in a recent case in Pune.
On November 3, 2018, a 25-year-old Pune girl ordered a ring online. As it wasn’t as good as her expectations, she returned it and sought a refund of Rs 107. When the cashback wasn’t processed, she called customer care and was asked for her card details. She also agreed to give the OTP and that too- three times. The criminals smartly withdrew Rs 1600 in 3 transactions.
She didn’t got any idea what she was getting through but registered a complaint on the website. This time they asked details of another card to ‘process the refund’, so she provided her father’s details. The fraudsters instructed her to click a link sent to the father’s mobile phone and then switch off the device. Later, they found that his account had been wiped clean of around INR 80,000.
Police investigated the whole incident and On February 7, 3 people were arrested under IPC sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) and relevant provisions of the IT Act.
