One of the most interesting lives led by any YouTube sensation has to be the one and only Lilly Singh. As an emerging star in the year 2013 under the name ‘Superwoman’, she fought to fame with her little antics and has come a long way over the course of 7 years.

Who is Lilly Singh?

Singh was raised in Scarborough, Canada. Born of Indian parents who migrated to Canada before she was born, she has spent her whole life in the country. She was a tomboy from the beginning and always did out-of-the-box things. Her friends in school and even her family were aware of that and accepted her for who she was. She was and still is obsessed with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who is world famous as a pro wrestler and actor, and dressed up as him when she was little. She also used to keep a cutout of him in her bedroom.

She was heavily involved in the hip-hop culture and her parents recognized her goals to become a rapper. In the year 2010, she graduated from NYU and took up a regular job at a collections agency which she hated. This is when she decided to take life into her own hands and followed the footsteps of content creators like Jenna Marbles. She made her first video at the age of 22 under the name ‘Superwoman‘.

Lilly Singh’s Journey to Stardom

Lilly Singh’s ‘Superwoman’ was derived from a song name by the rapper Lil’ Mo. By launching her first video on YouTube called ‘Official Guide To Brown Girls‘, she soon converted it into making comic skits about the Indian culture. She started receiving 10,000 views on each of her videos everyday. Soon she realized that she needed to get serious with her YouTube career.

She put her graduation on hold and focused on YouTube entirely. Her YouTube skits featured real life inspiration including her friends and family as she portrayed various alter egos. She started becoming more vocal about her thoughts and cultures which made her content more relatable. She soon flew to Los Angeles and also got a book deal, toured the whole world and featured in a movie shown on YouTube Red. She surely lived most of her adulthood!

Her accolades include earning $10.5 million in 2017 and being featured on Forbes’ list of Highest Earning YouTube stars. She also came out as ‘bisexual’ in February 2019 after coming out to her parents. Embracing her superpowers, her breakthroughs have been constant as her recent one included getting her own late night Talk Show called ‘A Little Late with Lilly Singh’.
