Se*ual harassment is something that every workplace should be shameful about. While times are changing and a lot of people are giving their efforts but not enough to change in the thinking of people. In fact, every time we get t hear a new story, the situation turns out to be worse.
A case from Indonesia is going viral as a woman was arrested for 6 months & fined Rs 24 lakhs for reporting sexual assault which happened to her. What happened is that a 41-year-old female employee named Nuril Maknun started receiving vulgar calls from her boss in 2013. He sexually harassed her and propositioned an affair. But when it started getting dirtier and the woman noticed that there’s a rumor about their affair, she started recording and share the calls with her husband and colleague as evidence.
Surprisingly, the boss filed a defamation case against her which led to a long trial and her acquittance. Even he appealed against the verdict and the woman was declared guilty of distributing obscene material and was badly punished with 6 months jail and a fine of approx $35,000 (Rs 24 lakhs) When the victim appealed in the Supreme Court of Indonesia, it was denied.
The woman appealed to Indonesia’s Supreme Court against the punishment but it was denied. After hearing the verdict she said,
“Clearly the person has admitted that it was his voice, admitted that he was the one who called me, admitted that he was the one who said things that were inappropriate. Why can he just casually walk around while I, as the victim, am the one being punished?”
“I, as a woman, should be protected, but then I was the one who became the victim. People should know that when we get harassed, there is no place to take refuge.” she further added,
This is really sad news and all we can do is hope that when her lawyer applies for amnesty, she is pardoned and the actual offender is put behind bars.
